Trash days vary by address. Properties with one to nine residential units use a secure trash bin holding 55 gallons or less. Put a bin out after 6 p.m. and have all waste ready by midnight.
NYC collects metal, glass, plastic, cartons, mixed paper, and cardboard on the address recycling schedule. Use a labeled secure bin after 6 p.m. or a clear bag after 8 p.m. Citywide compost is collected weekly on the recycling day.

Use the official DSNY address schedule. Ordinary large items no longer use a pickup appointment. A separate 311 appointment is required only for CFC removal from refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, dehumidifiers, and similar cooling appliances.

New York City no longer uses a limited fall leaf schedule. Leaves and other plant waste go with curbside compost every week on the address recycling day, and separating yard waste from trash is mandatory.

A compost bin must have a secure lid and hold 55 gallons or less.
Large woody bundles must be no larger than 2 feet by 4 feet and 40 pounds.
What residents should do

Trash, recycling, and compost each have a curbside rule
Collection days vary by address. All waste must be ready by midnight, and citywide curbside compost is collected each week on the recycling day.
Use a secure bin for smaller residential buildings
Properties with one to nine residential units use trash bins with secure lids. The bin must hold 55 gallons or less.
Use a labeled bin or clear bag
Bins may go out after 6 p.m. Clear recycling bags may go out after 8 p.m. Keep paper separate from metal, glass, plastic, and cartons as DSNY directs.
Weekly on the recycling day
Put food scraps, food soiled paper, and yard waste in a labeled secure bin. Extra yard waste can use an approved paper or clear bag.

NYC no longer books ordinary large item appointments
Use the correct curbside day for ordinary furniture and appliances. Only items with a special handling rule, such as a cooling appliance, need a separate request.

Place eligible large items at the curb between 6 p.m. and midnight before the correct trash or recycling day. Do not block the sidewalk. Seal every mattress or box spring in a clear plastic bag and tie rugs securely.
